De Compostbode

De Compostbode

The idea behind Compostbode (the Dutch name translates as 'Compostman') is to develop a new model of collecting and processing urban organic residue. The starting point is collection of organic waste from homes, restaurants and markets quickly and close to the source, namely in recycling stations within city districts, which is also where the collected waste is then composted and otherwise processed into useful raw materials.

The resulting compost is sold to agricultural business around the city, who in turn sell their regional produce through the recycling stations. This way, Compostbode creates regional feedback loops and new connections between farmers and city folk.

Compostbode was initiated by Wageningen UR Livestock Research, Vista Landscape Architecture and Urban Planning, and recycling and farming organizations Afval Loont, Eco-Cycle and De Boerderij die Bindt. An initial calculation of the business case has shown that the project has potential. Its practicability needs to be further researched and the project is open to participation and financing. We are currently looking for a suitable location for a pilot.
